What does it mean to be a black single in the United States today? Well firstly it means that you have to deal with plenty of ignorance. I'm not talking about other races not accepting us for who we are, rather, I'm talking about us reversing the roles on the keep to your own attitude that we seem to be perpetuating. Isn't this just the kind of ignorance that we are trying to prevent anyone from imposing on us?

I thought that we were above this sort of thing, where people were shaking their heads when someone dates outside of their race. It's not even a culture thing, because if an African man and a Dominican woman dates nobody cares, but if that Dominican woman dates a Mexican then watch out! Does that really make sense? Just because the Dominican woman has dark skin, she should date someone dark? Wouldn't the Latin aspect seem to lean toward her looking more favorably on the Mexican man? Why can't we love the person that we love, despite race and creed, just as we have wanted all along? If I want an Asian lover than why would I need to answer to my friends if I take him out with me to the club or over someone's house?

That's not even the worst of it either; can someone tell me if there is a man or woman out there that can speak the English language anymore? Who really wants to date someone that sounds like a Yo! MTV throwback? I understand that some people find their identity with a more “thuggish” image, but when you're talking to me, please use some real words. Isn't it better to be understood? I just can't keep up with all the stupid things that people say. And why do the ladies need to look like some stupid satire film about token black women in a movie? Seriously, sometimes pants that fit are way better than ones that are like five sizes too small, right? The last time I checked, a bra was a piece of underwear, meaning that we wear it under our clothing ladies, and the same thing goes for that thong that is all up your back instead of in your pants. Just because you got some crazy half made up name like Aqualoquitia or whatever doesn't mean that you need to make yourself into the picture of hot ghetto nastiness, you can rise above the perceptions of your fellow man.

What is the black dating scene turning into? We don't have to be like a real life Flavor of Love or I Love New York rerun. It's not all about the way that we look, and we don't have to dumb ourselves down. We do not need to reduce ourselves to what the television sitcoms and music videos say that we are. When we have gotten to a point where we are able to take our seat at the table and prove ourselves, why would we try so hard to ruin all that we have? There is no reason to dumb down our entire race, and ethnic cleansing went out of style decades ago, so why would we do this to our own people when we all have been trying so hard to break free of the stereotypes. Maybe if we just all spoke the same language and stopped trying to be blacker than the next brother or sister then we could stop making ourselves into what we never wanted to be.
